Resolution

We scan all photographs at 250% with a print resolution of 300dpi. This will allow you to print a high-quality print at 2.5 times the original size.
This size will allow display at full resolution on a 4k or HD TV. Unlike modern cameras and TVs that have a 16:9 ratio, photographs have a 1:1.50 screen ratio, this means that when displayed on a TV to show the full image you will have black bars on both horizontal sides unless you crop the top and bottom of the image to fit the whole screen.

Dust & Scatches

Photographs are prone to fingerprints from being handled over the years. Before we scan your photographs, we blow any dust off and, where possible, remove any marks left by handling. Our software also scans for any marks, picking up any on the photograph and will remove them whilst keeping the image sharp. Please be aware that some of these marks would have happened when developing the 35mm film into the photograph.

Colour Correction

The cameras that most photographs were taken with were point and click, these cameras had very basic settings to make them easier to use than the previous SLR cameras on the market. The films used on these were in the lower range of quality and the processing of the film was generic for types of films for speed (a lot of photo processors offered 1-hour turnaround). When we scan your photographs, we will make basic colour corrections to bring back colours that may have been lost when the film was developed, bringing the print back to life.

Enlargements

We scan photographs at their optimal resolution of 250%. If you would like your photograph scanned to a larger size, this can be arranged. If you let us know the final use for the digital file, we can advise you on the size that is needed and the additional cost. Please be aware that the larger the scan, the more imperfections will show up, so it’s always best to scan the slide at the optimal enlargement for the final use.

Enlarged Photo In Frame

The History

Photographs were mainly taken with 35mm film and developed to produce the negative strips you have returned along with your photographs. These negatives are then enlarged to produce a positive image on paper. As photography became more popular, click cameras became cheaper, as did the film and processing costs. Kodak designed several other consumer formats like APS and Kodak Disc but both of these used smaller frame sizes than 35mm and the quality suffered. Both products were discontinued whereas 35mm film has been in use since 1934.
